The History of the Dolls.
These pendants evoke not only the Russian Babushka stacking dolls, but also the Japanese Kokeshi dolls. Kokeshi dolls are a Japanese folk art dating back to the 1800′s. It is believed that they were originally given to wish for a healthy child, although they were also used as charms to prevent fire and ward off evil. Today they are given as tokens of love and friendship.
Interestingly, the Kokeshi Doll was the original inspiration for the Russian Babushka, which was first carved in 1890. Although initially the Russian nesting doll depicted the mother and children, today the Babushka is made to also represent contemporary life in a myriad of events The dolls display a harmony of tradition given a modern interpretation; a treasure perfect for women in today’s world.
